CATOOSA, Okla. – Marvelyn Kartika carded the low round of the tournament in round two Tuesday with a 68 (-2) to lead University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Golf to a season opening win in the NSU Golf Classic at Cherokee Hills Golf Club.
Kartika was one of two players to record an under-par round on her way to climbing the leaderboard from a tie for 24th after round one to finish in a tie for second with a 145 (+5). She had four birdies on the round and capped her day with an eagle on the par-4 18th. Kartika was one-under on par-3s for the event.
UAFS won the event by 10 strokes over host Northeastern State, finishing with a two-day total of 591. The Lady Lions shot a 299 in round one and 292 in round two. UAFS had the best scoring average on all holes and had tournament highs of 109 pars and 18 birdies.
"Grit and determination are things you are not able to teach," Head Coach Daniel Hayden said. "These girls displayed both when times were tough and never gave up. They believed in one another and this truly was a team win."
Sydney Williams tied for fourth with a 146 (+6), shooting a 73 both days. Williams led all players with 27 pars and had two birdies. Both Williams and Kartika earned All-Tournament honors.
Sidney Stramel made for three Lions earning top 10s, tying for ninth with a 149 (+9). Stramel had four birdies as she shot a first round 73 (+3) and finished with a second round 76 (+6). Her six birdies led the Lions.
Simone Campise earned a tie for 15th finishing with a 152 (+12). Campise carded rounds of 77 (+7) and 75 (+5) while totaling 22 pars and two birdies.
Maisie Liddell rounded out the five for the Lions, finishing in a tie for 23rd with a 155 (+15). Liddell carded four birdies, all in round one.
Next on the docket for UAFS is the Shootout at Estrella at the Golf Club of Estrella September 26-27 in Goodyear, Arizona.
