WARRENSBURG, MO – Sam Sewell returned the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Golf lineup with a second-place finish Tuesday at the Mule at Mules National Golf Club.
After missing all of last season, Sewell carded a 208 (-2) in his first event back to pace the Lions. He had his best round in round three, shooting a 67 (-3) with seven birdies. He shot an even-par 70 in round one and a 71 (+1) in round two.
Sewell led the Lions and finished tied for third with 12 birdies overall. He shot four-under on par-5s and tied for the tournament lead with a one-over on par-3s with teammate Murphy Allard.
"No words can really explain this week," Sewell said. "This team and coach mean everything to me and for us to come our and perform is absolutely incredible."
Allard completed his first tournament for UAFS in a tie for 19th, tallying a 217 (+7). He rebounded from a first-round 77 to post a 69 (-1) in round two and a 71 in round three. Allard and Phisher Phillips each led the Lions with 38 pars.
JD Frederiksen finished 33rd with a 220 (+10), while Phillips tied for 41st with a 221 (+11). Frederiksen had rounds of 77-73-70 and led the Lions in par-4 scoring, totaling seven birdies. Phillips carded rounds of 74-77-70.
Chandler Cooke rounded out the UAFS lineup with a 229 (+19).
The Lions moved up nine spots in the final round with a 278 (-2) to finish third with an 866 (+26). UAFS led the tournament with 173 pars.
Next up for the Lions is the NSU Invitational September 15-16 at Paige Belcher Golf Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
