Lady Lions Split Weekend Matches

            The UAFS women’s team split its weekend matches, sweeping NCAA Division II East Central University before getting swept by NAIA No. 5-ranked Oklahoma Christian University.
            UAFS (3-2) beat ECU 9-0 and lost to OCU 9-0 at Edmond, Okla., on Saturday.
            The Lady Lions set the tone for their sweep of ECU (0-1) by winning all three doubles matches.
            Junior Abby Whittemore and freshman Monica Pieratt beat Kristen Clubb and MartaValles 8-2 in No. 1 doubles, sophomores Whitney Hobson and Amy Belanger beat Agostina Moran and Gentry Fisher 8-0 in No. 2 doubles and senior Stanislava Harvanova and freshman Masa Podunavac beat Kelsey Kerr and Katelin Threet 8-2.
            Pieratt, who is ranked No. 28 in singles, beat Valles 7-5, 6-1 in No. 1 singles to highlight the Lady Lions’ domination of the singles matches.
            OCU (1-0) lived up to its high-billing by shutting out UAFS. It was the second time in three matches the Lady Lions had been shut out. NCAA Division I Missouri beat UAFS 7-0 last week.
            Hermon Brhane and Lucie Sipkova, who are ranked No. 1, sparked OCU’s sweep of the doubles matches with an 8-4 win against Whittemore and Pierratt.
            The Lady Lions encountered two nationally-ranked players in singles action. Sipkova, who is ranked No. 11, beat Pieratt, who is ranked No. 28, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Brhane, who is ranked No. 2, beat Whittemore 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles.
            UAFS will resume play at 11 a.m. on Wednesday against NCAA Division I University of Central Arkansas in Conway.
