FORT SMITH, Ark. – Finally, the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Diamond Lions’ bats came alive.
UA Fort Smith pounded out 12 hits off four East Central pitchers Tuesday afternoon as the Lions run-ruled the Tigers 15-5 in seven innings at Crowder Field.
It was the second win in a row for the Lions (7-14), who were coming off a doubleheader split against Cameron on Monday afternoon. It was the ninth consecutive loss for the Tigers (3-14), who have lost 14 of their past 15 games.
Shortstop Matt Brown and first baseman Gordon Miller were each 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Lions, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Brown had a pair of doubles, and Miller had a double and a triple. Second baseman Blake Gaither was 4 for 5 with two RBIs.
Five Lions had two or more RBIs.
Tigers starter Heath Stuckey (0-3) suffered the loss in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed nine runs – eight earned – on six hits, walked five and struck out two.
East Central collected 10 hits. Designated hitter Trevor Gavin was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a home run. Right fielder Dackry Howard was 2 for 3 with one RBI, and center fielder Grant Rainwater was 2 for 3.
Freshman Hunter Benton (1-2) earned the win in relief of Lions starter Zared Gay. Gay allowed five runs – four earned – on seven hits during three innings and left with the game tied at five runs apiece. Benton allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out four.
UA Fort Smith will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Southern Arkansas in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. at Crowder Field. It will be the first two games of a five-game, three-day stretch for the Lions.
