The teams will conclude the series Friday with another doubleheader starting at noon.
UTPB 20, UAFS 4
The Lions' outfield combined for seven hits in the first game of the doubleheader, but a 10-run third inning for the Falcons was too much to overcome.
Brandon Ulmer homered in the third to bring the Lions within 4-1 before the Falcons erupted in the bottom half of the frame.
UAFS scored twice in the fourth on RBIs from catcher Ryan Riggs and outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom and then added a single tally in the fifth on an RBI double by infielder Nico Patrick.
Michael Brinton finished 3-for-4 with a run scored while Quarnstrom and Ulmer each had two hits.
UTPB 9, UAFS 6
The Lions struggled to slow down the UTPB bats in game two, as the Falcons plated six runs in the first two innings.
UAFS slowly chipped away at the deficit, scoring once in the second on a Quarnstrom RBI single and then a two-run single from infielder Matt Schilling in the third.
After the Falcons scored single tallies in the fourth and fifth to grow the lead back to five, UAFS plated two in the sixth off an error and an RBI single by Ulmer. Patrick pulled the Lions within two in the seventh with another RBI single, but the Lions were unable to put together a rally in the final two innings.
UTPB added an insurance run in the eighth for the final tally.
The Lions finished with 10 hits for the second straight game, getting two apiece from infielder Noah Davis and designated hitter Noah Ochoa. Brinton and infielder Dakota Peters each scored twice.
Devon Chapa started on the mound in game two and tossed six innings.
