Ulmer hits for cycle, ties RBI record in win at Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball tied the program record for runs scored in a game as the Lions split a doubleheader at Lubbock Christian Saturday.

The Chaps took game one, 4-2, before the Lions exploded at the plate in game two with a 25-6 win. The teams conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Infielder Dakota Peters drove in a pair of runs but a three-run homer by the Chaps proved to be the difference in game one.

Peters started the scoring with an RBI single in the second, with the Chaps home run coming in the bottom of the third. Peters cut the deficit to one with a bloop single to center in the fourth, but the Chaps got the run back in the fourth.

Outfielder Michael Brinton had two hits and scored both runs.

Brayden Ross got the start on the mound for the Lions, surrendering four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings while striking out four. Lukas Petross tossed the final 1.2 innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts.

UAFS 25, Lubbock Christian 6

Outfielder Brandon Ulmer hit for the cycle and tied the program record with eight RBIs as the Lions tied the program record for runs with 25.

Ulmer finished 4-for-5 at the plate with the eight RBIs and four runs scored. Catcher Nico Patrick also had a big game, going 3-for-5 with a run and six RBIs. Infielder Noah Davis went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs.

Infielder Cayden Burch recorded his first two collegiate hits as he went 2-for-2 with five runs scored, four walks and an RBI. Six Lions scored at least three runs and six had multi-hit games.

UAFS scored in every inning with at least three runs scored in each of the final six frames.

After Brinton opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single, the Lions scored three times in the second with RBIs from outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom, Davis and Patrick.

Ulmer got the first leg of the cycle with a two-run homer in the third, followed by a two-run single by Patrick as the Lions opened up an 8-1 lead.

After tallying five runs in the fourth to lead 13-1, the Chaps responded with five runs of their own to make it 13-6. But the Lions answered right back, with Ulmer collecting a two-run triple in the top of the fifth.

Ulmer collected his single for an RBI in the sixth, then doubled in two more in the seventh to complete the feat.

UAFS collected 19 hits in the win and walked 16 times.

Devon Chapa earned the win in relief after allowing one unearned run in 1.1 innings. Riley Lowry had the start for the Lions, allowing five runs – three earned – on four hits and five walks with a pair of strikeouts. Both Junior Torres and Sean Rhodes pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.
