Late surge propels Lions past Falcons

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Guard Payton Brown scored a game-high 29 points as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith used a late rally to defeat UT Permian Basin, 68-63, Saturday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center for its first Lone Star Conference win of the season.

Down 60-59 with 2:30 left, the Lions went on a 7-0 run spurred by a jumper in the paint by forward Jaxon Ingram and capped with a triple by Brown for a 66-60 lead with just 35 seconds on the clock. Brown then iced the game with a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession.

The Falcons scored the first basket of the game, but the Lions quickly took the lead and built it to as many as eight as they led for the remainder of the half and took a 31-29 lead into the break on a layup by guard Cameron Bush.

The second half then featured eight lead changes and five ties, as the 66-60 lead for UAFS was the largest of the half for either team.

UTPB came out of the locker room on a 9-3 run as it took a four-point lead. Brown and guard Evan Anderson then made back-to-back jumpers later in the half to tie the game before a three by Brown gave UAFS a 50-49 advantage.

The lead then changed seven times in the final 9:30 of game time, with the final lead change coming on the basket by Ingram.

Brown shot 10-for-18 from the field and 5-of-11 from beyond the arc as UAFS shot 57.1 percent in the first half and 53.1 percent for the game. Brown and Bush were each 4-for-4 from the line as UAFS went 9-for-9.

Ingram joined Brown in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds, while forward Furaha Cadeaux de Dieu added nine points. Anderson and Bush each scored eight points and had four assists, while Anderson added four steals, as well.

UAFS will visit Oklahoma Christian December 19 for its final game before the holiday break.
