Lady Lions Earn Honors

FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas - Fort Smith volleyball players Lucia Najselova and Heidi Luks recently earned NCAA Division II All-Independents Collegiate Athletic Association honors for their performance this past season.

Najselova and Luks were each named second team All-ICAA, which is comprised of NCAA Division II independents in all sports.

Even though UA Fort Smith does not compete as an independent – it is a member of the Heartland Conference – it is a provisional member of Division II this season and was ineligible to compete for the regular-season conference title or qualify for postseason play.

Najselova, a 5-foot-10 setter from Nitra, Slovakia, played in 123 games this past season as a junior, and she recorded a team-high 1,192 assists along with 110 kills, 66 aces, 214 digs and 54 blocks. She compiled a 0.198 attack percentage.

Luks, a 5-11 outside hitter/middle hitter from Tallinn, Estonia, played in 123 games this past season as a sophomore and led the team with 342 kills, a 0.368 attack percentage and 141 blocks. She was second on the team with 345 digs and had 34 assists and 20 aces.

The duo helped lead the Lady Lions to a 32-4 overall record. It was the ninth 30-plus win season for UA Fort Smith in the 12-year history of the program. The Lady Lions’ 32 wins are the ninth-most wins in a season in the program’s history but occurred during only a 36-match season – the fewest matches the Lady Lions have played since playing 34 matches during their inaugural season in 1998.

UA Fort Smith’s four losses are tied for the second-fewest losses in the program’s history. The Lady Lions lost an all-time low three matches in 2005 (42-3) and lost four matches last season (44-4).
