TOPEKA, Kan. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball was swept in a weekend series at Washburn as the series wrapped up Saturday.
The Ichabods won by scores of 9-3, 13-3 and 10-0. UAFS is set to return home Tuesday at 1 p.m. for the series finale against Northeastern State.
Washburn 9, UAFS 3
The Ichabods took a 6-0 lead after three innings before the Lions scored a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Caleb Eisenhower and Dylan Herriage.
Washburn then struck for three runs in the seventh before Layne Sweat doubled and scored in the top of the eighth for the final run.
Eisenhower finished with two hits for the Lions while CJ Snoweden went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Eli Gilreath allowed all nine runs over six-plus innings on the mound with three strikeouts while Colby Morrow pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Washburn 13, UAFS 3
The Lions struck first as they manufactured a pair of runs in the first inning but the Ichabods answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame.
After three scoreless innings, Washburn scored in the fifth with the Lions scoring in the sixth when Sweat scored on an Ichabod error. But Washburn responded with two in the sixth and then ended the game with five runs in the eighth.
UAFS put two runners on in the third and fourth innings but was unable to push across a run.
Quinton Borders and Connor Earleywine each had two hits for the Lions while Steffan Fak allowed just three runs on two hits over 4.2 innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts. Spencer Bass threw another scoreless inning out of the bullpen and has allowed just one earned run over his last 7.2 innings.
Washburn 10, UAFS 0
The Lions were held to just four hits in the finale against the Ichabods as Jett Frazier tossed five strong innings.
Washburn scored a pair of runs in the first before Frazer kept the Ichabods off the board until the fifth when they scored three times. Washburn then added four in the sixth and the final tally in the eighth.
UAFS loaded the bases in the third but a flyout ended the rally and had two runners on in the fourth before ending the inning with a strikeout. The Lions again loaded the bases in the eighth with one out but were unable to score.
Frazier tossed 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with two punchouts.
