Lions score record 15 runs in fifth inning to top RiverHawks

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball scored a program-record 15 runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Lions collected their first home win of the season, 21-9, Tuesday at Crowder Field over Northeastern State.

The Lions hit three home runs in the inning, including a grand slam by infielder Layne Sweat.

After the RiverHawks tied the game at 6-6 in the top half of the fifth, outfielder JJ Young put the Lions ahead with a solo homer to right center. The Lions then loaded the bases and scored on a walk and an RBI single by infielder Connor Earleywine before the Sweat grand slam.

The Lions continued the scoring barrage as infielder Logan Lundquist, catcher Cody Walkingstick and outfielder Ty Wiley all collected RBIs. After a two-run single by Earleywine, Sweat singled leading to a three-run blast by Borders to cap the scoring in the frame.

UAFS had nine batters come to the plate before recording an out in the inning.

Eight Lions scored multiple runs while eight collected a hit. Earleywine, Borders, Young and Lundquist all drove in three runs with Sweat driving in five. Earleywine led the Lions by scoring four times with Sweat and Borders scoring three times each.

Northeastern State scored in the opening inning off starter Spencer Bass, making his first career start on the mound. UAFS then answered with three in the bottom half on a sac fly by Young and a two-run single by Lundquist.

Bass finished with 3.1 innings on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Colby Morrow earned the win in relief with 2.2 innings pitched.

UAFS will complete its road schedule this weekend when it visits Central Oklahoma for a three-game series starting Friday.
