WICHITA, Kan. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball continued its offensive onslaught Saturday as the Lions swept a doubleheader at Newman to sweep the series.
UAFS won game one, 12-1, in seven innings and then scored six runs in the ninth inning of game two to win 14-9.
The Lions return home Tuesday to host Northeastern State at 1 p.m. at Crowder Field.
UAFS 12, Newman 1
Right-hander Jett Frazier tossed a complete game as the Lions took game one of the doubleheader. Frazier allowed just one run on four hits over seven frames while striking out four in the win.
Frazier got all the run support he needed in the first two innings as the Lions raced out to a 7-0 lead. UAFS scored three runs in the first on an RBI single by outfielder CJ Snowden with two runs then scoring on a Newman error.
In the second, infielder Caleb Eisenhower cleared the bases with a triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Snowden.
The Lions extended the lead to 9-0 in the fourth as Snowden and Eisenhower each drove in another run and then 10-0 in the fifth on a sac fly by infielder Layne Sweat.
After the Jets scored in the fifth, UAFS pushed across its final two runs in the sixth.
Snowden and Earleywine finished with three hits apiece as the top four in the lineup scored 10 of the 12 runs. Eisenhower tallied four RBIs in the win.
UAFS 14, Newman 9
The Lions scored eight times in the final two innings to break a 6-6 tie to sweep the doubleheader and the series.
Outfielder JJ Young led off the eighth with a single and then scored on an RBI single by infielder Quinton Borders for a 7-6 lead. Eisenhower then delivered a sac fly to score Earleywine for an 8-6 advantage.
UAFS broke the game open in the ninth with six runs, as Borders drew a bases loaded walk and Eisenhower plated two more with a single. Snowden capped the inning with a two-run homer for a 14-6 lead.
The Lions trailed 5-2 after three innings and pushed one run across in the fourth on an RBI single by Earleywine. UAFS then took the lead with three runs in the sixth on another Earleywine single and a two-run homer by Borders.
Earleywine walked four times and scored three runs while Borders went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Eisenhower drove in three more runs while outfielder Nick Mazzola went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a homer.
Tommy Kelsey earned the win on the mound by tossing the final 3.2 innings. He pitched 3.1 scoreless before the Jets tallied three runs in the bottom of the ninth.
