FORT SMITH, Ark. – No. 25 University of Arkansas - Fort Smith had six score in double figures for the second straight game as the Lions defeated Fort Hays State, 87-77, at the Stubblefield Center Saturday.
The Lions shot a blistering 63.6 percent from three (14-for-22) and finished at 57.7 percent overall. Guard Brandon Scott was 5-for-7 from distance and guard Jarren McAllister was 3-for-5 as each led the Lions with 17 points.
After a back-and-forth first few minutes, the Lions built a 20-12 lead with a 10-2 run before the Tigers answered with seven straight points. An 11-2 run for UAFS put the Lions up 31-21, the same margin the Lions would take to the locker room after a buzzer beating three by guard Christian Moore.
UAFS extended the lead to 63-45 with 13:11 left before the Tigers cut the deficit in half over the next four minutes. The lead never dipped below nine as the Lions scored the most points the Tigers have allowed this season.
Guard Kanaan Holder scored 14 points in his first start of the season while guard Christian Moore had 12 points and four assists. Guard VJ Reeves led the bench unit with 16 points on three triples while forward Kameron Johnson had 10 points and a team-high eight boards.
The Lions will go on the road next week to face top-ranked Washburn at 7:30 p.m. February 12.
