FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball was unable to overcome a slow start as the Lions fell to Central Oklahoma, 69-56, Thursday at the Stubblefield Center.
The Bronchos score the first seven points of the game as the Lions trailed by 12 at the first media timeout. However, the Lions slowly chipped away, getting within two on a layup by guard Jack Hoth at 20-18.
But Central Oklahoma then went on a 14-3 run to lead 35-21 before the Bronchos took a 37-24 lead into halftime.
UCO grew the lead to as many as 17 at 51-34 midway through the second half before the Lions started a rally. Over the next four minutes, the Lions went on a 16-2 spurt to pull within three with eight points from guard Kanaan Holder.
That was as close as the Lions would get, as the Bronchos closed the last five minutes on a 13-4 run.
Holder and guard VJ Reeves each led the Lions with 12 points while guard Jarren McAllister had eight points and seven boards. UAFS shot just 36.1 percent from the floor and 28.0 percent from three.
The Lions outscored the Bronchos, 30-22, in points in the paint and 14-5 in points off turnovers, but were outrebounded 39-27 as UCO had a 12-5 edge in second chance points.
UAFS will close out the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday against Rogers State at the Stubblefield Center.
