FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball scored in double figures for the fourth time this season Sunday but the Lions were unable to take down Emporia State, falling 16-10 in the series finale.
Trailing 8-0 in the fifth, the Lions clawed their way back into the game with four runs. The first four batters reached safely as infielder Shelby Anders drove in a pair with a single to right to get the Lions on the board.
UAFS then scored a third run on an Emporia error and a fourth on an RBI fielder's choice by outfielder CJ Snowden.
The rally continued in the sixth as outfielder JJ Young singled in a run and scored on an RBI double by catcher Carter Allen. Outfielder Connor Earleywine capped the scoring with another RBI single as the Lions pulled within 8-7.
However, the Hornets tallied three runs in each the seventh and eighth innings to lead 14-8. The Lions had the first three runners reach in the eighth as they pushed across two more runs but Emporia scored two more in the top of the ninth.
Earleywine and infielder Caleb Eisenhower each had two hits for the Lions while Young, Allen and Anders all scored twice.
Aden Almeida started on the mound, allowing seven runs on six hits over four innings with three strikeouts.
UAFS returns to nonconference action Tuesday as the Lions host Henderson State at 2 p.m. at Crowder Field.
