MARYVILLE, Mo. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball built a double-digit lead and held on for a 73-68 win at Northwest Missouri Saturday to close out the road portion of its schedule.
Tied at 53, the Lions went on a 12-0 run over a five-minute stretch. However, the Bearcats answered with a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to pull within 69-68 with one minute remaining.
UAFS was unable to extend its lead on its next offensive possession but got a defensive stop before guard Brandon Scott hit two free throws to go back up by three. A steal and two free throws by forward Kameron Johnson then sealed the game for the Lions.
A back-and-forth start to the game, the Lions inched ahead with a 12-4 run to break a 21-21 tie and took a 39-30 advantage to the locker room.
Northwest pulled within 44-43 before the first media timeout of the second half before the Lions went back up six, but an 8-2 run by the Bearcats pulled them even at 51.
Scott led four in double figures with 17 points and eight rebounds while guard Christian Moore added 15 points. Guard Kanaan Holder and Kameron Johnson anchored the bench unit with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
UAFS shot 51.8 percent from the floor and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Lions had a 22-9 edge in points off turnovers and 48-30 advantage in points in the paint.
Next up for the Lions is a matchup against Central Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Stubblefield Center.
