FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball fell to 0-2 in MIAA play with a 12-1 defeat to Emporia State in eight innings Saturday at Crowder Field.
For the second day in a row the Hornets scored in the opening frame and scored six times in the first four innings.
The Lions scored the first run of the season off Emporia starter Colby Deaver in the fourth when outfielder CJ Snowden singled up the middle to score infielder Quinton Borders. Snowden had two of the Lions' five hits on the afternoon.
However, the Hornets put the game out of reach with a grand slam in the eighth and added another run on a sacrifice fly.
UAFS had an opportunity to extend the game in the bottom of the eighth when they loaded the bases with one out but were unable to push across a run.
Ethan Waters started on the mound for the Lions, allowing five runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings.
The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Crowder Field.
