EMPORIA, Kan. – Lefty Grant Shankle pitched a complete-game shutout as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball defeated Emporia State, 3-0, Saturday.
Shankle allowed just three hits in the win, his fifth of the season. He worked around six walks and struck out two. He didn't allow his first hit until the fourth inning, and only allowed multiple baserunners in two innings.
The Lions gave Shankle all the run support he needed after loading the bases in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by infielder Noah Davis.
The Hornets had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lions threw the runner out at home to keep the shutout alive.
UAFS then added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by infielder Jordon Helm then tacked on another insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by outfielder JJ Young.
Emporia put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, but Shankle ended the inning with a groundout.
UAFS tallied seven hits by seven different players.
The teams conclude the series at noon on Sunday.
