FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball scored in double figures for the second straight game as the Lions took game two over Newman, 13-10, Saturday at Crowder Field.
The Lions never trailed, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first while only tallying one hit. After the Jets tallied single runs in the second and third, the Lions broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the third, all with two outs.
After the first two batters were retired, the Lions rattled off five consecutive hits, capped by a two-run triple by infielder Jordon Helm.
UAFS went up, 8-3, when infielder Eli Gilreath walked with the bases loaded in the fourth.
But the Jets would not go away, scoring three times in the fifth to get within 8-6. The Lions then took advantage of a pair of Newman mistakes in the bottom half of the frame to go back up by four.
Newman pulled within one in the seventh, but the Lions added a pair of insurance runs on a sac fly and an infield single by Helm.
Tanner Callahan then came on in the eighth and threw two scoreless innings to record the save. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
Outfielder Cooper White went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs, with all three hits going for extra bases. Helm, Gilreath and outfielder JJ Young all finished with two hits, while designated hitter Dakota Peters collected two RBIs.
Grant Shankle started on the mound for the Lions, allowing six runs on 11 hits over five innings. He struck out five.
The teams conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
