FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball had a lead slip away in the final innings in an 8-6 defeat to Newman Sunday at Crowder Field in the series finale.

The Lions led, 6-4, entering the seventh inning, but the Jets scored twice in the seventh to tie the game and then two more in the ninth to take the come-from-behind win.

UAFS had runners at the corners in the seventh with two outs, but both were left stranded.

The Jets took a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second, where the Lions answered with four runs of their own. UAFS was walked four times in the inning and added two hit by pitches to score four times on just one hit.

UAFS then took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by infielder Nico Patrick and added a sixth run in the fifth on doubles by infielders Eli Gilreath and Jordon Helm.

Outfielder Cooper White capped a strong weekend at the plate by going 4-for-4 with a double, run and RBI.

Chase Pair threw 5.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs – two earned – on eight hits with three strikeouts.

UAFS will play its final nonconference game of the season Tuesday at Oklahoma Baptist at 5 p.m.
