FORT SMITH, Ark. – Henderson State scored nine runs in the final two innings as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball fell to the Reddies, 18-9, in the home opener at Crowder Field Tuesday.
The Lions tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh on a sac fly by infielder Noah Davis, but the Reddies scored five times in the eighth and added four more in the ninth to steal the win.
After the Reddies scored a single tally in the top of the first, the Lions answered with three runs in the bottom half. Davis started the scoring with a solo homer to left before infielder Nico Patrick went back-to-back with a solo blast to right.
The Lions third run scored on an RBI groundout from designated hitter Dakota Peters, scoring outfielder CJ Snowden.
UAFS scored in each of the first five innings, tallying a single run in the second through fourth frames and then two in the fifth for an 8-6 advantage. Infielder Jordon Helm drove in two of those runs.
However, the Reddies answered with three runs in the top of the sixth before Davis tied the game in the seventh.
Davis finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Lions had nine hits on the afternoon. Catcher Ryan Riggs scored three times while Snowden scored twice.
On the mound, starter Matthew Winters tossed four innings, allowing six runs – four earned – on five hits with three strikeouts. Reliever Tanner Callahan took the loss in relief, allowing five runs on six hits over three-plus innings.
Next up for the Lions is a weekend series at Southeastern Oklahoma State February 7-9. First pitch Friday is 4 p.m.
