FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball saw another one-run lead slip away as the Lions dropped a heartbreaker in the series finale, 13-12, Monday against Fort Hays State at Crowder Field.
The Lions rallied from a six-run deficit in the seventh, putting up a six spot of their own after allowing six runs in the sixth. After pushing across two runs in the frame, outfielder Cooper White cleared the bases with a three-run double to right to pull the Lions within a run. Two pitches later, he tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch.
UAFS took the lead in the eighth when infielder Eli Gilreath collected his second double of the afternoon with one out. After advancing to third, Gilreath scored on an infield single by outfielder Sammy Seeger.
However, the Tigers tallied a pair of runs in the ninth to regain the lead while the Lions went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.
The Lions struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, scoring two runs on an RBI groundout by infielder Nico Patrick and an RBI double by infielder Noah Davis.
After Fort Hays tied the game in the second, the Lions tallied two more runs on RBIs by Patrick and infielder Jordon Helm. Davis later gave UAFS a 5-4 lead in the fifth on an RBI double before the Tigers scored six runs in the sixth.
Gilreath, Davis, Seeger and Randon Ray all tallied two hits for the Lions, with White and Davis each driving in three runs. Gilreath also scored three times.
Reliever Tanner Callan took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits over 2.2 innings. Starter Aden Almeida allowed four runs on four hits and five walks over four innings of work. Matthew Winters and Chase Pair each threw an inning of relief.
UAFS will quickly turn around and travel to Henderson State for a nonconference match at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
