Lions topple No. 1 Washburn in overtime thriller

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball toppled previously unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Washburn, 87-80, Thursday in an overtime thriller at the Stubblefield Center.

The Lions outscored the Ichabods, 14-7, in the extra frame for their first win over a ranked opponent since the 2020-21 season.

Forward Isaiah Lewis started the overtime scoring with a layup, followed by five straight points by guard Terrell Williams Jr. for an 80-76 lead with 2:14 remaining. The Lions then went 7-for-8 from the line in the final two minutes to seal the upset.

UAFS led, 64-59, midway through the second half before the Ichabods went on a 10-0 run to go up, 69-64 with 4:43 left. The Lions answered right back, as guard Roland McCoy hit his eighth three of the game to tie it at 69-69.

The Ichabods then went up by three before Lewis made a layup to cut the lead to one. After Washburn split a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left, Lewis drained a pair of free throws of his own with two seconds left to send the game to overtime.

UAFS had trailed by 10 in the first half, but cut the deficit to four heading into the break. The Lions then scored on five of their first six possessions of the second half to even the game. Overall, the game featured eight ties and seven lead changes.

McCoy's eight triples tie for the second most ever in a game, as he finished 8-for-14 from beyond and led all scorers with 26 points. He also added three steals.

Williams Jr. finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Lewis and Jarren McAllister finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Guard Elijah Wilson dished out a team-high five assists.

The Lions finished the night at 48.2 percent from the field and 39.4 percent from three, while the Ichabods shot 41.7 percent for the game.

The Lions will now look to take the momentum into Saturday's game at the Stubblefield Center at 3 p.m. against Central Missouri.
