Bench powers Lions to 10-0 start with win over UTPB

SAN ANTONIO – One of the top bench units in the country delivered once again as it poured in 51 points to lead No. 20 University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball to a 78-64 win over UT Permian Basin in the final game of the River City Holiday Classic Wednesday.

Kanaan Holder led the Lions with 16 points while VJ Reeves added 15, all from behind the arc and finished with a double-double by adding 10 rebounds. Jack Hoth scored all 10 of his points in the first half, of which the bench scored 32 of 46 points.

UTPB had an early 10-5 lead before back-to-back threes by Holder and Hoth put the Lions ahead by one. Tied at 13, the Lions went on a 21-7 run over six minutes to take a 34-20 advantage. Holder and Hoth combined for 15 of the 21 points during the run.

The Falcons got within single digits late in the first half, but the Lions led by double figures the rest of the way. The Lions broke the game open with a 17-5 run in the second half to take their largest lead at 72-50.

Christian Moore added eight points for the Lions, while Brandon Scott and Kameron Johnson each finished with seven.

UAFS shot 47.8 percent from beyond the arc while holding the Falcons to 12.5 percent. The Lions outrebounded the Falcons, 45-35 and had a 19-9 advantage in second chance points. UAFS also had a 12-2 edge in fast break points with 14 points off turnovers.

The Lions will wrap up nonconference play Sunday at Drury at 1 p.m.
