HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Designated hitter Dan Taylor laced a two-out, two-run single to left in the top of the ninth as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball defeated Ouachita Baptist, 4-2, at the Dugan Invitational Friday.
It was the 14th consecutive opening day win for the Lions.
Infielder Jordon Helm led off the inning with his third hit of the day, then advanced to second on a single by infielder Noah Davis. Outfielder CJ Snowden then loaded the bases with one out with a single to left before Taylor delivered the game-winning hit.
Left-hander Khaden Washington finished off the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, part of four scoreless innings of relief. He did not allow a hit and struck out eight to earn the win.
Outfielder Cooper White started the scoring for the Lions in the fourth, tying the game at 1-1 with a solo homer to right. The Lions then took the lead in the fifth after Helm led off with a double and scored on a single by Davis.
UAFS had a chance to add to their lead in the fifth, but stranded the bases loaded. Ouachita then evened the game in the bottom half with a solo homer.
Brayden Ross got the start on the mound for the Lions, tossing five strong innings. He allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits with four strikeouts for a no decision.
Helm finished 3-for-3 at the dish with a pair of runs scored and a double, while Davis and White each finished with two hits.
The Lions continue the Dugan Invitational Saturday at 1 p.m. against Southern Arkansas at Majestic Park.
