Strong pitching leads Lions to doubleheader sweep at Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N. M. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball got back to .500 as the Lions swept Eastern New Mexico in a doubleheader Friday. The wins moved the Lions to 12-6 away from home this season.

Both games were low scoring, as the Lions won 3-1 and 4-3. The series continues with a single game Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

UAFS 3, Eastern New Mexico 1

Grant Shankle tossed six strong innings as the Lions took a low-scoring game one. He allowed just two hits – both singles – and surrendered one run while striking out a season-high five to earn his third win of the season.

Luke Davenport came on in relief in the seventh and escaped a bases loaded jam by inducing a game-ending double play for his second save of the season.

With runners on second and third with one out in the top of the first, infielder Dakota Peters gave Shankle all the run support he would need when he singled to left to score outfielder Brandon Ulmer and infielder Noah Davis.

The Lions made it 3-0 in the fifth when the catcher reached for a wild pitch with his mask, allowing both runners to automatically advance.

Davis led the Lions at the plate with three hits and a pair of runs scored.

UAFS 4, Eastern New Mexico 3

Outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom singled up the middle to score pinch runner Sammy Seeger as the Lions came from behind to earn the sweep.

Designated hitter Dan Taylor led off the seventh with a double, with Seeger then running and advancing to third on a balk. Quarnstrom then delivered the go-ahead hit on a 1-2 count to put the Lions ahead.

Logan Grant came in to pitch the seventh to close out the game, earning the save and another win for starter Brayden Ross. Ross struck out six over six innings while allowing three runs on five hits.

UAFS went up 1-0 in the first on a sac fly by outfielder Michael Brinton before the Greyhounds tied it in the bottom half of the inning. ENMU then went up, 3-1, after scoring a pair of runs in the third.

After three scoreless innings, the Lions finally broke through again in the fifth with Ulmer drove in a pair with a single to tie the game. Ulmer led the Lions at the plate with a pair of hits and a run scored.

Ross escaped a jam in the sixth, as the Lions threw out a runner at home and then stranded runners at second and third to end the inning to send the game to the seventh, tied at 3-3.
