Seven-run second powers Lions past Greyhounds

PORTALES, N. M. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball scored seven runs in the top of the second inning to jump start a 14-9 victory at Eastern New Mexico Saturday.

After the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Lions batted around in the second, with infielder Dakota Peters collecting both of his hits in the inning. Peters led off the inning with a double before scoring on an RBI single by catcher Nico Patrick.

Infielder Matt Schilling later drove in Patrick to put the Lions in front, with the Lions then receiving RBIs from outfielder Brandon Ulmer and infielder Noah Davis for a 5-1 advantage. Outfielder Michael Brinton then drove in a run with a triple before Peters capped the inning with another RBI.

The Greyhounds got two runs back in the third and another in the fourth before the Lions had another big inning in the sixth, scoring four times.

Patrick delivered the big blow in that sixth inning, getting a ball up in the wind that carried out to center for a three-run homer. The Lions then added a run on a wild pitch for a 12-4 lead.

UAFS tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on RBIs from Brinton and pinch hitter Tanner Callahan. ENMU then scored three times in the bottom of the eighth for the final tally.

The top five in the batting order all collected two hits and scored at least one run, with Davis and Brinton each scoring three times. Peters finished with three RBIs and Patrick four.

Jakob Petross pitched the final 5.1 innings to earn the win while striking out four. Devon Chapa threw 3.2 innings in his first start of the season.
