AUSTIN – Infielder Dakota Peters drove in a career-high six runs as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball defeated St. Edward's, 18-11, in the series finale Sunday.
Peters finished 3-for-3 with a homer, six RBIs and a pair of runs scored and was one of seven Lions with at least two hits. Peters put the Lions on top in the opening frame when he doubled to drive in outfielder Michael Brinton.
After the Hilltoppers took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, Peters broke a 2-2 tie in the second with a bases-clearing double to left center and then scored on an RBI single from catcher Nico Patrick.
UAFS then scored five runs in back-to-back innings with five in the third, capped by a two-run homer by Peters. The Lions extended the lead to 13-3 in the fourth when Brinton doubled to left center as two more runs came across.
The Lions held their largest lead of the game at 16-5 in the sixth, when pinch hitter Ryan Riggs singled in a run followed by a two-run homer by designated hitter Dan Taylor.
St. Edward's then pulled within 16-11 after four runs in the sixth and two in the eighth before the Lions added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on a sac fly by Riggs and an RBI double by Patrick.
Patrick and Taylor joined Peters with three hits each, while Patrick, Taylor, Riggs and Brinton all had two RBIs apiece.
Infielder Jordon Helm scored a game-high four runs with Brinton and outfielder Brandon Ulmer scoring three times each.
Logan Grant pitched four innings in relief to earn the win, allowing three runs on four hits. Jakob Petross tossed the final 3.2 innings to earn the save, allowing two runs while striking out six.
UAFS returns to Crowder Field Thursday to host West Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
