FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith fell in extra innings Thursday, dropping a 10-6 decision to No. 4 West Texas A&M in 11 innings at Crowder Field.
The Buffaloes tied the game in the top of the ninth on a solo home run before scoring four times in the top of the 11th.
Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third, the Lions loaded the bases before tying the game on a walk by designated hitter Dan Taylor. Infielder Matt Schilling gave the Lions the lead with an RBI infield single before catcher Ryan Riggs cleared the bases with a triple to left center to give the Lions a 5-1 lead.
However, the Buffs chipped away at the UAFS lead with single tallies in five straight innings, with the Lions scoring in the fifth on an RBI single by infielder Noah Davis to take a 6-5 lead into the final frame.
UAFS was unable to garner any baserunners over the final 3.2 innings.
Davis collected two hits for the Lions and scored a run, while Riggs drove in three. Infielder Nico Patrick had a hit a scored twice.
Grant Shankle started on the mound for the Lions, allowing two runs over four innings. Luke Davenport and Jakob Petross each threw three innings in relief.
The series continues with a doubleheader Friday starting at 1 p.m.
