Lions upended by Javelinas in doubleheader

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball was swept in a doubleheader at Crowder Field Saturday, dropping a pair of games to visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The Javelinas scored three times in the seventh to take game one, 6-5, and then took game two, 5-0. Sunday's series finale has a first pitch of 1 p.m.

Infielder Matt Schilling put the Lions up, 4-3, with an RBI double to right center in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lions were unable to hold onto the lead.

The Javelinas scored three runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead, then held off a UAFS rally in the bottom half of the frame.

Infielder Dakota Peters brought the Lions within 6-5 with an RBI single up the middle and put the tying run on third base. However, the Lions lined into a double play to end the game.

Texas A&M-Kingsville jumped on starter Brayden Ross for three runs in the first inning before Ross held the Javelinas off the scoreboard for the next three-plus innings. Ross finished with 4.1 innings pitched and allowed three runs on seven hits with one strikeout.

UAFS tied the game in the fourth, when two runs scored on a dopped fly ball by the Javelinas. Schilling then singled in outfielder Michael Brinton to tie the game at 3-3.

Luke Davenport came on in relief of Ross and tossed two innings before surrendering the three runs in the seventh.

Catcher Nico Patrick added three hits and a run for the Lions.

UAFS mustered just one hit by Schilling as Javelina pitcher Colton Taylor pitched a one-hit shutout.

TAMUK tallied single runs in the second and third off starter Riley Lowry then added two more in the fifth on a pair of Lion errors. Lowry allowed three runs on six hits over four innings while Logan Grant allowed two runs over the final three frames.
