Lions' late rally comes up short

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball's late rally came up short Sunday as the Lions dropped the series finale, 13-6, against Texas A&M-Kingsville at Crowder Field.

The Lions pulled within a run at 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth, but the Javelinas scored six insurance runs in the top of the ninth with the help of a grand slam.

Back-to-back doubles by infielder Cayden Burch and outfielder Brandon Ulmer to lead off the eighth started the rally followed by a walk by outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom. After a wild pitch, catcher Nico Patrick doubled down the left field line to make it a one-run game.

But the Javelinas has seven of eight batters reach in the ninth as they put the game out of reach.

TAMUK took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth when designated hitter Dan Taylor drove in Patrick for the Lions' first run of the game. UAFS added a second run on an RBI single by infielder Dakota Peters in the fifth, but Kingsville tacked on two more in the seventh.

Taylor proceeded to drive in another run in the seventh with a bases loaded walk, but the Lions then left the bases loaded. Peters, Taylor and Ulmer all collected two hits on the afternoon.

Ty Jones started for the Lions, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over four innings.

Next up for the Lions is a road trip to St. Edward's March 22-24.
