Callahan tallies pair of hits in opener versus TAMUK

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Tanner Callahan came off the bench to provide a pair of hits for University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball Friday, but the Lions dropped the series opener, 4-2, at Crowder Field versus Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Callahan doubled to lead off the sixth but was left stranded and then had a one-out single in the eighth before Sammy Seeger pinch ran and came around to score the Lions' first run of the game. Infielder Jordon Helm brought in the Lions' second run with a sacrifice fly.

UAFS was held scoreless for the first seven innings while the Javelinas scored single tallies in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead off starter Grant Shankle. TAMUK then doubled their lead in the fifth on a pair of solo home runs.

Catcher Ryan Riggs drove in Seeger in the eighth with a bases loaded single to put the Lions on the board.

UAFS put two runners on in both the second and seventh innings but was unable to bring a run across.

Shankle went on to toss seven innings, striking out seven while allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits. Both Lukas Petross and Devon Chapa pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
