LAREDO, Texas – Infielder Dakota Peters hit a game-winning two-run homer in the top of the ninth as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball defeated Texas A&M International, 7-5, in the series finale Sunday.
Tied at 5-5 entering the ninth, catcher Nico Patrick led off the inning with a hit by pitch before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Peters then drove a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to put the Lions back in front.
UAFS tied the game in the top of the eighth when infielder Jordon Helm singled to center to score outfielder Michael Brinton.
Luke Davenport earned his second win of the weekend and fifth win of the season by tossing three scoreless innings to end the game. He allowed just a single hit to go with one strikeout.
The Lions scored first in the top of the third when Patrick singled in a run and Peters followed with a sacrifice fly. However, the Dustdevils answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.
UAFS got two runs back in the top of the fifth, with Patrick driving in another run with a double and Brinton collecting an RBI single. Patrick finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while Peters went 2-for-4 with three driven in.
Right-hander Ty Jones got the start in his first collegiate appearance, tossing three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and had three strikeouts. Junior Torres also threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, surrendering one hit.
The Lions return home next weekend to host Texas A&M-Kingsville at Crowder Field.
