FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball took advantage of a pair of Angelo State errors to down the Rams, 5-2, in the opening game of a four-game series Friday at Crowder Field.
With ASU leading 2-1, infielder Matt Schilling led off the fifth with a single, then advanced on a throwing error. Infielder Jordon Helm loaded the bases as he reached on another ASU error, with the Lions tying the game on an RBI single by outfielder Brandon Ulmer.
Infielder Noah Davis gave the Lions the lead by drawing a bases loaded walk followed by Helm scoring on a wild pitch.
Luke Davenport shut the Rams down after entering in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded, escaping the jam by inducing a fielder's choice. Davenport earned his third win of the season by tossing 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing three hits.
Logan Grant earned the save with a scoreless ninth after coming on with two runners on. He struck out his first batter before getting a pair of groundouts.
The Lions struck first in the opening frame, when designated hitter singled in outfielder Blayse Quarnstrom. Angelo State then took the lead with single tallies in the second and fifth.
UAFS added an insurance run on an infield RBI single by Davis. Quarnstrom and Ulmer each led the Lions with two hits.
Left Grant Shankle started on the mound for the Lions, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings. He had one strikeout with three walks and four hits allowed.
The teams continue the series Saturday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
