FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball was unable to get the bats going in a doubleheader against Angelo State, as the Lions were swept, 4-3 and 5-2, Saturday at Crowder Field.
The Lions will look to split the series in the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
Angelo State 4, UAFS 3
The Rams scored three times in the top of the third as the Lions committed a pair of errors to take the game on win.
UAFS put the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the bottom of the seventh but ended the game with a strikeout and groundout.
After the Rams tallied three in the fifth, the Lions got a run back in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Brandon Ulmer. The Rams then put up an insurance run in the top of the fourth.
Infielder Matt Schilling then hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Lions back within 4-2. With two on in the seventh, infielder Jordon Helm delivered an RBI single to right to make it a one-run game, but the Lions were unable to drive in the tying run.
Brayden Ross started for the Lions, suffering the loss after tossing 5.0 innings. He allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Junior Torres and Lukas Petross each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Angelo State 5, UAFS 2
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when outfielder Michael Brinton drove in a run and scored on a wild pitch, but a three-run seventh for Angelo State put the Rams on top.
ASU scored single tallies in both the third and fifth innings to tie the game before the three-run seventh.
UAFS tallied just two hits over the final five innings.
Riley Lowry started on the mound and allowed one run over three innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Devon Chapa also tossed three frames in relief, allowing one run on two hits.
