SILVER CITY, N.M. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball came up just short win a wild triple overtime matchup at Western New Mexico Thursday, falling to the Mustangs, 109-106.
Guard Payton Brown drained a triple from the left win with a minute left to tie the game at 104-104, but the Mustangs answered with a three of their own as the Lions were down to just four players for the final 2:37.
On the net possession, guard Roland McCoy hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game, only for the Mustangs to do the same. The Lions had two looks before the buzzer but were unable to get one to fall.
McCoy and Brown did all they could for the shorthanded Lions, combining for 63 points. McCoy tallied a career-high 35 points with five threes and a 10-for-11 effort from the free throw line while Brown added 28 points while going 12-for-12 from the line.
The Lions shot 45.5 percent in the first half and held the Mustangs to 26.7 percent as the raced out to a 44-29 halftime advantage. UAFS led by as many as 16 in the opening 20 minutes.
However, the Mustangs used a 10-2 run in the second half to pull within 56-54 with 7:51 remaining. The Lions continued to lead and held a 74-70 advantage with 1:04 left after a McCoy three, but four Mustang free throws in the final minute sent the game to overtime.
UAFS scored the first four points of the first overtime but the Mustangs came back to take an 81-80 lead. The Lions were then up two in the final seconds, with WNMU hitting a putback layup to send the game to a second overtime.
The Lions once again jumped out to a lead in the second overtime before the Mustangs rallied with a 7-0 run. McCoy tied the game at 94-94 with a pair of free throws with neither team scoring on their final possession of the period.
Both teams had multiple players foul out, which saw the Lions go 33-for-42 from the line and the Mustangs 38-for-51.
Western New Mexico outrebounded the Lion, 49-35, leading to a 33-18 advantage in second chance points for the Mustangs. The Lions also struggled with turnovers, turning it over 20 times as the Mustangs put up 23 points off turnovers.
Guard Kobe Campbell joined Brown and McCoy in playing over 40 minutes, adding 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Forward Ryan Maxwell contributed 12 points and three blocks, while guard Cameron Bush had a team-high 10 rebounds and four assists.
UAFS plays its final regular season road game Saturday at Eastern New Mexico at 4 p.m.
