FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball erased a double-digit second half deficit to come from behind to take down St. Edward's, 75-69, Thursday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
UAFS started the second half with four straight points, but the Hilltoppers answered with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to lead, 50-39, early in the second half.
The Lions stayed resilient, slowly chipping away at the lead and ultimately tying it up at 62-62 with 5:01 remaining on a three-point play by forward Ryan Maxwell.
The teams traded scores on their next possessions before the Lions got a stop and a go-ahead three-point play by guard Cameron Bush. UAFS led 69-66 until a St. Edward's three tied it once again with just under a minute and a half left.
Bush then came down and hit a step-back jumper in the paint to take a 71-69 lead, and two stops and four free throws later the Lions had their second consecutive win.
The Lions led 3-2 early on after a three by guard Payton Brown, but a 6-2 run by the Hilltoppers put them in front for the next eight minutes. Tied at 25, St. Edward's used a 12-4 run before leading the Lions, 40-35, at halftime.
The UAFS defense held St. Edward's to 32.4 percent shooting in the second half and 38.8 percent for the game. Maxwell made his presence felt on the interior, blocking five shots.
Maxwell led the Lions with 13 points while Bush and Brown each scored 11 points. Forward Furaha Cadeuax de Dieu added eight points and had a team-high 10 rebounds.
UAFS once again made offensive rebounding a priority, scoring a 14-6 edge in second chance points. The Lions also had a 46-26 edge in points in the paint.
Up next for the Lions is a home contest against St. Mary's Saturday at 3 p.m.
