Lions make most of second chances in win at Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball picked up a season sweep over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday by defeating the Javelinas, 74-70.

Guard Payton Brown hit a second chance three with 37 seconds left to put the Lions up 72-70, followed by a steal by guard Kobe Campbell on the ensuing defensive possession. Guard Cameron Bush then sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 11 second left.

UAFS led 32-29 at the break, then built the lead up to 10 early in the second half with an 8-0 run. However, the Javelinas used a 15-3 run over five minutes to go in front, 53-51.

The game was tied six times from that point on and featured 11 lead changes in the final nine minutes. Neither team led by more than three during the stretch until the final free throws. Overall, the game featured 12 ties and 17 lead changes.

UAFS led by as many as eight in the early first half and was ahead for the majority of the first 20 minutes.

The Lions dominated in the paint, securing a 38-18 edge in the painted area and had 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 23 second chance points. UAFS won the battle on the glass, 42-26. That margin was the highest against an NCAA II opponent this season.

Guard Roland McCoy led the Lions with 17 points and seven boards off the bench, while Bush added 14 points, five rebounds, three steals and dished out a career-high nine assists. Brown tallied 13 points and three assists, with forward Jace Linenberger pitching in with a career-high 11 points.

Forward Furaha Cadeaux de Dieu just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Lions return home Thursday to face St. Edward's at 7:30 p.m.
