Lions best Panthers to wrap up nonconference play

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Men's Basketball heads into the holiday break on a three-game winning streak after the Lions defeated Drury, 89-76, Saturday afternoon at the Stubblefield Center.

The Lions shot 85.0 percent (17-for-20) in the second half as they tallied 52 points. They shot 7-for-10 from beyond the arc in the second half, as well. Overall, the Lions 62.5 percent for the second time in three games, the seventh-best single game mark in program history. The 64.7 percent mark from three ranks third best in a single game.

UAFS used an 8-1 run midway through the second half as the Lions held their largest lead of the game at 61-46 with 11:32 remaining. However, the Panthers rallied to cut the deficit to two with just over four minutes left.

But the Lions quickly responded, scoring the next 10 points, with six from guard Tommie Williams to build the lead back to 12. The Lions sank their final eight free throws to put the game away.

Drury led 8-4 to start the game, but the Lions bounced back to tie the game at 15-15. A layup by guard VJ Reeves then put the Lions ahead, 17-15, giving them a lead they would not relinquish. UAFS led by as many as 11 in the first half before taking a 37-31 lead into the break.

Reeves led four players in double figures with 16 points and had a team-high seven boards while guard Roland McCoy drained four threes and scored 14 points. Williams filled the stat sheet with 12 points, five boards and five assists while guard Terrell Williams Jr. added 12 points and six rebounds. Williams Jr. scored 10 of his 12 points from the foul line.

UAFS scored 45 bench points and had a 38-30 edge in points in the paint. The Lions also had a 14-7 advantage in fast break points and won the rebounding battle, 31-23.

The Lions will return to action after the holiday break January 2 at Pittsburg State to resume MIAA play.
