CANYON, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball saw a pair of late leads slip away Saturday as it dropped both games of a doubleheader at West Texas A&M, 7-3 and 8-4.
The Lions will look to take the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
West Texas A&M 7, UAFS 3
UAFS scored three times in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, but the Buffaloes answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the opener.
Trailing 1-0, infielder Matt Schilling blasted a two-run homer to left to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. Four batters later, outfielder Brandon Ulmer made it 3-1 with an RBI single to score outfielder Michael Brinton.
But the lead was short lived, as the Buffs tallied four runs in the bottom half of the frame and added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Starter Brayden Johnson pitched into the sixth inning, surrendering seven runs on nine hits with six punchouts over 5.2 frames.
West Texas A&M 8, UAFS 4
The Lions once again led in the later innings, only to see the Buffs score five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to sweep the doubleheader.
UAFS evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on a solo home run by Brinton and then took the lead on a two-run single in the third by Ulmer. The Lions tacked on a third run in the third inning on an RBI single by infielder Mason Reynolds to score Brinton.
However, the Buffs rallied once again by scoring twice in the fifth and five times in the sixth. UAFS put two runners on in the seventh, but both were left stranded.
Jakob Petross pitched four-plus innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two. Devon Chapa was saddled with the loss in relief after allowing five runs on three hits in two innings. He struck out two.
Ulmer extended his hitting streak to nine games by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Reynolds and Brinton each collected two hits.
