Offense stymied by Javelinas in Saturday's doubleheader

KINGSVILLE, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball was unable to generate much offense Saturday as the Lions were swept in a doubleheader at Texas A&M-Kingsville, 2-1 and 5-0.

The Lions mustered just three hits in game one, but took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout by infielder Jordon Helm.

However, the Javelinas tallied a hit by pitch and three hits in the fifth to score twice and hold on for the win in the opener.

Starter Brayden Johnson was strong on the mound again, going the distance while allowing the two runs on six hits and striking out four. Shortstop Matt Schilling had two of the three hits for the Lions.

UAFS left 10 runners on base in the game and left the bases loaded in the second.

In game two, the Lions were held to five singles, two by outfielder Brandon Ulmer.

The Lions had chances to score in the fifth with runners on second and third and in the seventh with the bases loaded both opportunities came up empty.

Kingsville scored one run in the first and added three in the fifth to break the game open.

Logan Grant started game two for the Lions, allowing four runs – two earned – on eight hits with eight strikeouts over 4.2 innings.

UAFS will look for a win in the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
