KINGSVILLE, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball snapped a 12-game losing streak Sunday by defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville, 6-3, in the series finale.
The Lions took an early 1-0 lead by scoring in the first on a sacrifice fly by infielder Matt Schilling, but the Javelinas evened the game at 1-1 by pushing across a run in the third.
UAFS tallied five runs in the sixth through eighth innings, taking the lead in the sixth on a solo homer by Schilling. Blayse Quarnstrom added to the lead in the seventh with an RBI single before the Lions scored three times in the eighth.
Designated hitter Tanner Callahan led of the eighth with a double and scored on an RBI single by outfielder Brandon Ulmer. After a walk, infielder Mason Reynolds delivered an RBI single with the final run of the inning scoring on a wild pitch.
The Javelinas rallied for two runs in the ninth but Brayden Ross shut the door for his first save of the season as he tossed the final 3.1 innings. Ross allowed four hits and struck out two.
Grant Shankle earned the win in relief with 1.1 scoreless innings while Devon Chapa got the start, surrendering just one run on one hit and three walks over four innings.
The Lions return home to Crowder Field next weekend to take on St. Edward's.
