Miscues allow Dustdevils to sweep Lions

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Errors were costly once again for University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball, as the Lions were swept in a doubleheader Saturday by Texas A&M International at Crowder Field.

In the opener, the Dustdevils scored three runs via error and another on a balk in a 4-3 TAMIU win. They scored twice in the first inning on a two-out error for an early 2-0 lead.

UAFS got a run back in the second as shortstop Will Trollinger delivered an RBI single for his first career hit. The Lions then tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double by outfielder Michael Brinton.

Starter Brayden Johnson kept the Dustdevils off the scoreboard until the sixth, when they scored on a balk. Once again, the Lions tied it up, as outfielder Mason Dagley singled to lead off the seventh and scored on a passed ball.

Johnson finished his day with six innings pitched, allowing three runs – one earned – on five hits with eight strikeouts.

TAMIU then scored the game-winning run in the ninth on another two-out error with the Lions unable to respond despite a one-out walk.

Utilityman Blayse Quarnstrom had a double and a triple at the plate for the Lions. Pitcher Jakob Petross took the loss after allowing one unearned run over three innings on just one hit. He struck out three.

Brinton provided the only offense for the Lions in the nightcap with a solo homer as the Dustdevils scored in each of the first six innings to defeat the Lions, 16-1.

The Lions will look to take the finale of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
