SAN ANTONIO - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball split is doubleheader at St. Mary's Saturday, winning the opener 4-3, before dropping the nightcap by the same score.
The Lions will go for the series win Sunday at 1 p.m.
UAFS 4, St. Mary's 3
The Lions scored three times in the top of the seventh to earn the come-from-behind win.
Outfielder Brandon Ulmer led the inning off with a walk, then scored on an RBI double by infielder Jordon Helm. The rally had to wait until two outs to be completed, after infielder Noah Davis walked and outfielder Michael Brinton drove in Helm with a single to tie the game.
UAFS didn't need a hit to bring home the winning run, as Davis scored on a wild pitch.
Logan Grant threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to earn his second save of the series.
UAFS took a 1-0 lead in the first as Davis doubled in infielder Matt Schilling, who led off the game with a single. The Rattlers then scored three in the third on a three-run homer.
The Lions had put two runners on with no outs in the top of the sixth but left both runners stranded.
Lukas Petross earned the win by tossing a scoreless sixth inning with one strikeout. Starter Brayden Johnson threw five innings, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and four walks. Johnson struck out six.
St. Mary's 4, UAFS 3
The luck was reversed on the Lions in game two, as the Rattlers walked-off the Lions, 4-3.
UAFS needed a rally in the top of the seventh, trailing 3-2. Infielder Dakota Peters led off the inning with a single with infielder Blayse Quarnstrom reaching on an error. After a sac bunt by Schilling, Davis tied the game with an RBI single to left.
The Lions then hit into a double play to end the inning, preventing them from taking the lead.
St. Mary's led off the seventh with a single and moved the runner over with a sac bunt. The next batter singled through the right side to give the Rattlers the win.
The Rattlers took a 2-0 lead in the first and held that lead until the fourth inning. Designated hitter Tanner Callahan drove in the first run of the game for the Lions and Ulmer then tied the game with a single of his own. However, UAFS then left the bases loaded.
St. Mary's then regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Callahan led the Lions at the plate in game two with two hits. After earning the win in game one, Petross took the loss in game two. Grant Shankle started on the mound for the Lions, tossing five innings and allowing three runs on five hits.
