Lions mash four homers in finale at St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball hit four home runs in the series finale Sunday, but the Lions were on the short end of a 16-14 decision at St. Mary's.

The Lions scored eight runs in the first inning on just two hits, both by shortstop Matt Schilling. Schilling led off the parade around the bases with a single before four walks scored two runs. Three more runs came across on two Rattler errors.

With two outs, Schilling capped the inning with a three-run blast to left for an 8-0 lead.

However, the lead didn't last long as St. Mary's got one run back in the bottom half of the inning and six more in the second. St. Mary's then took the lead in the third by scoring four times.

Schilling hit his second homer of the game in the sixth, a solo shot to pull the Lions within 11-9.

But St. Mary's added five insurance runs, scoring three times in the seventh and twice in the eighth.

The Lions had one last rally in the ninth, hitting a pair of home runs. Outfielder Brandon Ulmer hit a three-run homer with no outs and outfielder Michael Brinton hit a two-run homer with two outs for the final runs.

Schilling finished 3-for-6 with three runs and four RBIs, while Nico Patrick and Dan Taylor each went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.

Starter Trevor Johnson surrendered five runs in 1.2 innings, while the bullpen was tagged for 11 runs on 11 hits. UAFS struggled again defensively, committing five errors.

The Lions return home to face Lubbock Christian at Crowder Field February 24-26.
