FORT SMITH, Ark. – Errors were costly for University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball Monday, as the Lions were swept in a doubleheader by Oklahoma Christian, 14-4 and 8-3, at Crowder Field.
UAFS is on the road for its next series at St. Mary's February 17-19.
Oklahoma Christian 14, UAFS 4
The Eagles scored 13 runs in the fourth inning, aided by five Lion errors. Oklahoma Christian batted around twice in the inning.
UAFS scored all four runs via the home run, with outfielder Brandon Ulmer blasting a solo shot to right center in the fifth and first baseman Dakota Peters hitting a three-run homer to left in the sixth.
Peters finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Grant Shankle earned the start on the mound for the Lions, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks in three innings. John Toney closed the game by pitching the final 3.2 innings, surrendering three runs on three hits with six strikeouts.
Oklahoma Christian 8, UAFS 3
Errors hurt the Lions once again in the series finale, as the Lions committed two errors in a six-run fifth inning for the Eagles.
UAFS had taken a 3-0 lead in the first, as outfielder Michael Brinton laced an RBI double off the right field wall for the first run. The Lions then scored on a throwing error and a rundown for the final two runs of the inning.
Oklahoma Christian got one run back in the second before the six-run fifth. The Eagles then added a run on a solo home run in the ninth.
The Lions put two runners on in the bottom of the fifth but was unable to cut into the lead.
Trevor Johnson pitched four innings in his first start of the season, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five. Brayden Ross was saddled with the loss in relief, while Jakob Petross tossed the final 4.2 innings, striking out seven.
