Lions win thriller in walk-off fashion

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball scored six times without recording an out in the bottom of the ninth to win on a walk-off wild pitch Friday in the series opener against Cameron at Crowder Field.

UAFS scored all six runs in the ninth without recording an out, collecting four hits to go with two walks and to errors.

Third baseman Brooks Sunny and second baseman Hunter Church led off the inning with walks before designated hitter Mac Moody singled to load the bases. Shortstop Noah Davis continued his knack for the clutch hits by driving in two with a double to left center.

Pinch hitter Kaleb Shaffer then drove in a run with a single, putting the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate. The Aggies then threw the first of three wild pitches in the inning, allowing Davis to score to make it 13-12.

Back-to-back Cameron errors allowed the Lions to tie the game, and the Lions then reloaded the bases on a bunt single by outfielder Zach Slunder. With the bases now loaded for first baseman Nolan Riley, pinch runner Kaleb Thompson raced home on a wild pitch on the first pitch of the at bat to win the game.

UAFS dug themselves out of an early hole after falling behind 3-0 after the top of the first by scoring three times in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Aggies took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth until the Lions scored five times in the bottom half of the frame. Riley highlighted the inning with a bases clearing double to left to put UAFS up 7-6.

Cameron answered once again, scoring five times in the seventh and two more times in the eighth to take a 13-8 lead into the ninth before the Lions earned their second walk-off win of the season.

Davis led the Lions at the plate by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Riley went 1-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. UAFS had 10 different players score a run in the win.

Braiden Partin earned the win in relief, allowing just two unearned run over 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.
