PORTALES, N.M. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball bounced back from a 15-6 defeat in game one with a 5-3 win in the nightcap to split a doubleheader at Eastern New Mexico Saturday.
This is the fifth doubleheader split for the Lions this season. The series concludes Sunday at 2 p.m. at Greyhound Field.
Eastern New Mexico 15, UAFS 6
The Greyhounds scored 12 unanswered runs to pull away for the game one win. UAFS led 6-4 after the second inning, but Eastern New Mexico tallied four runs in the third, three in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
UAFS scored a single run in the top of the first on an RBI double by third baseman Brooks Sunny, only to see the Greyhounds respond with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the second, the Lions scored five times to regain the lead. After the first three batters reached, outfielder Zach Slunder drove in a run with a walk followed by a two-run single by first baseman Nolan Riley. Sunny then tied the game with his second RBI of the game on a single through the left side.
Shortstop Noah Davis added the final run of the inning on an RBI single to center to score Riley.
Starter Brayden Johnson was chased in the third inning after allowing eight runs on 10 hits. Sunny led the Lions at the plate with three hits as both he and Riley had two RBIs each.
UAFS 5, Eastern New Mexico 3
Right-hander Logan Grant tossed a complete game in the nightcap to earn his second win of the season. Grant was working on a four-hit shutout and had the Greyhounds down to their final strike before surrendering a three-run homer. He retired the next batter to end the game and finished with eight strikeouts.
UAFS broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by designated hitter Kaleb Shaffer. The Lions would then add three insurance runs in the top of the sixth to break the game open.
With two runners on, catcher Nico Patrick doubled in a run to give UAFS a 2-0 lead. Outfielder Kinner Brasher then replaced Patrick on second with a double to left, making it 3-0. Slunder capped the inning with an RBI single to score Brasher.
Patrick doubled once again in the seventh to drive in Hunter Church, who singled to lead off the inning. Patrick finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
