WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State stole another one-point game from University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball, defeating the Lions, 68-67, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum Thursday.
MSU led 68-64 with less than 20 seconds left before forward Chris Rollins put in a reverse layup to cut the lead to 68-66 with nine seconds left following a missed free throw by MSU. The Mustangs then missed the front end of another one-and-one with guard Courtney Murrell then getting fouled pushing the ball up the court.
After a timeout, Murrell made the first but missed the second and the Mustangs corralled the rebound for the win.
Tied at 60, the Mustangs used a 5-0 run to take a 65-60 lead with the Lions answering with four straight points of their own. MSU hit a jumper with just over a minute left and then a free throw with 37 seconds remaining to set up the final 20 seconds.
Down 44-39, UAFS went on an 8-0 run early in the second half to go up by three. UAFS built the lead up to 56-51 before the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run to lead 60-56.
The Lions broke open a 22-21 lead with back-to-back threes for a 28-21 lead with seven minutes to go in the first half, but the Mustangs went on a 17-2 run before guard Matthew Wilson hit a half court shot at the buzzer to send the game to the locker room with the Mustangs up, 38-33.
UAFS shot 13-for-27 from beyond the arc, with Wilson shooting 5-for-12 from distance. He led the team with 19 points. Guard Drew Miller scored 12 points on four triples while Murrell totaled 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
The Lions had just seven free throw attempts for the game, making four. Contrastingly, the Mustangs went 10-of-16 from the line. MSU also held a 30-14 advantage in points in the paint. MSU also held an advantage on the glass, leading to an edge in second chance points and had 17 fast break points, despite the Lions only turning it over eight times.
UAFS had a season high seven blocks in the loss.
The regular season concludes Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dallas Baptist as the Lions continue to battle for seeding in the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
