Lions top Patriots to secure home game in LSC Tournament

DALLAS – Guard Matthew Wilson scored 30 points as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball pulled out an 81-78 overtime win at Dallas Baptist to conclude the regular season Saturday.

UAFS scored the first basket in the extra frame, but the Patriots answered with an old fashioned three-point play. On the ensuing possession, guard Drew Miller hit a go-ahead three from the top of the key to give the Lions a 75-73 lead.

After a defensive stop, forward Chris Rollins converted a layup for a four-point lead. DBU cut the deficit to two, but the Lions then forced a turnover and iced the game with four free throws from guard Courtney Murrell and forward Justus Cooper.

UAFS led 67-61 with just over four minutes left in regulation, with the Patriots then going on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes. Wilson put the Lions back on top with a triple before DBU tied the game with two free throws. Both teams turned it over on their final possessions to send the game to overtime.

The Lions held the largest lead of the game at eight points in the first half before DBU regained the lead with a 12-3 run. UAFS then closed the half on a 7-0 run to take a 38-33 lead into halftime.

Wilson shot 13-for-29 from the field and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc in what was his fourth 30-point game of the season. He also added four assists. Rollins contributed a double-double by scoring 14 points to go with 10 rebounds.

Murrell played all 45 minutes, totaling 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Cooper had seven points and eight boards, while guard Cameron Bush stuffed the stat sheet off the bench with nine points, six rebounds and six assists.

UAFS shot 50.8 percent from the floor, marking the eighth time the Lions have shot better than 50 percent this season. It shot 52.6 percent from beyond the arc, as well. The Lions also had a 33-27 edge in rebounds and had nine second chance points.

UAFS will host a Lone Star Conference Tournament game on Tuesday with a time and opponent yet to be determined. A complete bracket will be announced later this evening.
