Baseball uses bullpen to sweep doubleheader at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader at Texas A&M International, earning wins by scores of 5-3 and 5-4.

The Lions will now go for the series win in the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.

UAFS 5, TAMIU 3

UAFS scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead and held the Dustdevils scoreless over the final five innings for the game one win.

The first four batters reached for the Lions in the fifth, with catcher Trevor Brown driving in outfielder Cash Balentine with the tying run after Balentine led off with a single and a steal. With the bases loaded, outfielder Kinner Brasher gave the Lions the lead with a sacrifice fly. Second baseman Mac Moody concluded the scoring with an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Reliever Dylan Rollins was stellar on the mound in relief, earning the win after not giving up a hit over the final 3.1 innings to go with three strikeouts.

The Dustdevils struck first by scoring once in the first and twice in the second and held that 3-0 lead until the fourth inning, when third baseman Brooks Sunny connected on his first home run of the season, a two-run dinger that cut the deficit to 3-2.

Logan Grant started game one for the Lions, allowing three runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings.

UAFS 5, TAMIU 4

UAFS built a five-run lead in the first two innings and once again had the bullpen shut down the Dustdevils to earn the doubleheader sweep.

The Lions scored three in the top of the first, with two runs on sacrifice flies and another on a balk. With runners on the corners in the second, Brasher drove in the fourth run of the game with a single to second. Moody then made it 5-0 with an RBI on a fielder's choice.

TAMIU scored four runs in the third via a grand slam to make it a 5-4 game, but were once again held off the scoreboard for the final four innings by the Lions bullpen.

Lukas Petross came on in relief and pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win, surrendering just three hits with three strikeouts. Starter Brayden Johnson allowed four runs on five hits over two innings.
